Calamp iOn Suite
Role: Visual designer | Design Language System and Product design
Calamp iOn Suite is a transportation & logistics suite of tools that brings real-time data to Logistics Managers, Fleet Managers, Dispatchers, & Dock Operators. I had the joy of working with an amazing team of incredible designers to design and build out a number of transportation, logistics & fleet management-focused features. Together, CalAmp iOn Suite is the most comprehensive, all-in-one tool that connects the T&L industry to the now.
Research
Transportation & Logistics Comprehensive Research
Our objective with this Design Research was to uncover pain points and unmet needs for users responsible for managing the transportation & logistics of shipments. We began by creating a T&L Ecosystem map, outlining what the T&L journey looks like, and what roles were in charge of what section of the journey.
Research Methods & Insights
In order to gain more understanding of challenges in the industry & to understand the T&L gigantic ecosystem, we ran two rounds of qualitative interviews with 11 prospective and existing CalAmp customers. We ran a set of activities with participants, including co-creation, journey mapping, & feature prioritization, from where we got the main insights.
Detailed Design
Over a total of 16 two-week Product Design Sprints, we designed the iOn Suite multi-sided platform and a DLS to build from it.
Visual design's main challenge was to create a seamless and clear experience that could provide the users with comprehensible, easy-to-digest, and actionable queues and information, all within a very constrained Design System.
Screens & Flows
WA Logistic Managers' bird eye's view & valuable features
At the core of the product, our goal was to give people a high-level control of what was happening with their shipments and the tools they need to take control if necessary. In this hero flow, we look at how a Logistics Manager would create a COVID shipment and set up a rule for a temperature excursion within that shipment.
Scheduling Tools for Simple Routes
Quick access to updating drivers & adjusting routes is a full time job for a Dispatcher. We focused on visual indicators that helped make decisions faster, like recommended drivers and a notification system to take action on.
Mobile First for Dock Operators
We optimized for mobile for dock operators. They are always on their feet and making quick decisions based on space, availability, and devices. They are efficiency experts and the unsung heros in the logistics world.
Monitoring only when necessary
Monitoring leads don't want to be bothered with the ins and outs of shipments. They want to know the problem if there is one immediately and the steps to solve it. We gave Monitor leads a responsive & simple reporting experience that helps them get the job done when it needs to.
Clear notification system for Fleet Managers
Fleet managers are in charge of the safety of their drivers. We designed a notification system that is simple, actionable, and gives Fleet Managers real insight into what's happening on the road. Quick actions to contact drivers are available with premade reports to share if neccesary.
Administrators want to set and forget
Setting up an automated rule workflow is an Administrator’s dream come true. We designed tools for them to set up the logic for themselves & their team to catch any issues before they become too serious.
Tractor Trailer Tracking Devices
In case of emergency, we designed a visual tractor trailer notification system indicating any tire pressure problems th at may be happening. This allows Fleet Managers to know if there is an issue, let the driver know where the problem is specifically, and immediately resolve it. A large part of this sprint was researching the architecture of tractor-trailer mechanisms to understand the device translation.
